House 4x4x4: A Functional and Sunlit Retreat

Unfolding Space and Letting Light In

The house is built centering on the concept of unfolding the space and letting the light in. Bright colors are chosen for the exterior walls and the entire space in order to extend the transmittance of the building, thereby making the house act as a container for natural light. Redundant parts of the design are removed, and the vaulted ceiling of the second floor is elevated to the third floor at the sacrifice of the 3-floor public area.

The House 4x4x4, designed by Ching-Huang Ju, is a remarkable example of architecture that combines functionality, energy efficiency, and an abundance of natural light. The owner, who spent years conducting business abroad, has now retired and returned to his hometown. The design team converted an old house in an old community into a three-story building that perfectly meets the owner's needs.

The uniqueness of House 4x4x4 lies in its accurate structure and layout, which enables a family of four to share public areas such as the courtyard, living room, dining room, and kitchen. The entire space is divided into four connected sections based on their functions, ensuring a seamless flow throughout the house.

One of the key design principles of House 4x4x4 is the emphasis on natural light. The bright colors chosen for the exterior walls and interior spaces extend the transmittance of the building, creating a sense of openness and spaciousness. By removing redundant parts of the design and elevating the vaulted ceiling of the second floor to the third floor, the house maximizes the entry of natural light.

The design also incorporates various unique features that enhance the functionality and enjoyment of the space. For example, the luminaires on the walls of the staircases are arranged in the order of the lady of the house's star sign, Cancer. The wide balcony with openwork extends the view from the living room, providing spatial variety and a connection to the outdoors. The owner's studio displays his life-long collection, adding a personal touch to the space.

House 4x4x4 is not only a functional and sunlit retreat but also an energy-efficient one. The rooftop drainage and transom windows are installed to enhance energy effectiveness, while the skylight on the top floor can be concealed with curtains, ensuring practicality and privacy.

Located in Changhua, Taiwan, House 4x4x4 stands as a beacon in the old community, with its unique pure white exterior resembling a lightbox. It offers a secluded and private living experience, allowing the owner to enjoy the beauty of nature throughout the day. From watching the clouds and sunlight during the day to admiring the moon and stars at night, House 4x4x4 truly harmonizes with heaven and earth.

The House 4x4x4 design project was completed in October 2019 and has received recognition for its excellence. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2020, a prestigious accolade that acknowledges well-designed, practical, and innovative creations. This award highlights the integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.
